The global spread of highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza in birds is considered a serious pandemic threat.

While other H5N1 influenza strains are known, they are considerably different from a current, highly pathogenic H5N1 strain on a genetic level. This makes the global spread of this new strain a major issue.

H5N1 breeds and spreads among birds, and can sometimes infect people. Since the virus was first spotted in Hong Kong in 1997, birds have spread it to many countries.

What are the Symptoms of H5N1 Flu

The symptoms of avian flu in humans are similar to other types of flu and include:

  • fever
  • fatigue
  • eye infections
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • muscle aches

When H5N1 avian influenza strikes humans, it will replicate in the lower respiratory tract. This results in viral pneumonia. H5N1 symptoms include sore throat, fever, cough, conjunctivitis, muscle aches, and sometimes pneumonia. The seriousness of the infection depends on the infected person’s immune system, and whether the person has been exposed to the virus before.

H5N1 occasionally infects people who have close contact with infected poultry, particularly in parts of Asia. WHO data indicate 60% of cases classified as H5N1 resulted in death. The actual mortality rate of avian flu may be lower, as there may be many people with mild symptoms who do not seek treatment and are, therefore, not counted.
